Recently a reader asked me why none of my cartoon characters are ever shown in a wheelchair. My simple answer was…I don’t know how to draw a wheelchair! So with the help of samples from Google Images, I learned. And then I added a new category to my website devoted to this topic. Web cartoons may be funny, but copyright law is serious business. Unauthorized use of copyrighted material is against the law. It is illegal to use copyrighted material without proper authorization, that includes use in newsletters, presentations, websites, blogs, social media, any type of print or electronic media. Regardless of the source, you should assume that all cartoons you find in print or electronic media are copyrighted by the person who created them.

Some cartoonists will let violators off easy with a warning and a request to cease and desist, others will contact a lawyer to pursue the matter more aggressively.  Getting permission to use a cartoon is easy, but getting caught violating copyright law can be expensive. Instead of “borrowing” a cartoon for your newsletter or presentation, contact the cartoonist for permission…a small permission fee is a lot less expensive than defending yourself in court.

Please take a few minutes to learn more about copyrights and how they apply to you and the material you find on the Internet.
